각 운영체제가 지원하고 있는 최대 물리적인 메모리 크기는 대응 CPU아키텍쳐(x86인지 x64인지), 운영체제 에디션, 서비스팩에 따라서 다르기 때문에 윈도우2000이후의 메모리지원스펙을 정리해보았다.

위 표를 보면 알 수 있듯이, 윈도우XP, 윈도우비스타, 윈도우7의 32비트 운영체지 및 서버의 Standard Edition에서 최대 4GB 물리적인 메모리만 지원하고 있다. 시스템에 5GB라든지 그 이상의 메모리카드를 장착해도 윈도우 운영체제는 4GB밖에 사용할 수 없다. 단, 서비스팩에 따라서, 시스템에 장착된 메모리 크기가 시스템 속성화면에 보여지는 경우가 있지만, 운영체제 자체적으로 물리적인 메모리는 4GB이하로 제한되어져 있다.
어떤 분들은 분명히 메모리가 윈도우 XP에서도 4GB이상 사용할 수 있다고 주장하는 분들이 있는데 이런 분들께서는 실제로 윈도우 운영체제가 메모리크기를 얼마나 인식하고 있는지에 대해서는 작업관리자에서 '실제 메모리(MB)'항목에서 전체 메모리항목을 확인하길 바란다.
